“Hurt people, hurt people -and themselves”. That’s a saying on the wall of my office where I work as a licensed substance abuse counselor and where my special area of interest is Anger Education. Daniel Goleman, author of the book, “Emotional Intelligence” says: “Our society is emotionally ignorant”, and I agree. If we provided our children with a simple understanding about painful emotions -what they were, how they worked, and the secret of releasing them, they could have a way of controlling their hurtful emotions. Because of ignorance however, by default, people do hurtful things to others, themselves, and to animals and they do it for this simple reason: It helps temporarily reduce the intensity of their stored up (emotional) hurts. Hurt, a mixture of anger and grief, that feels like it will never go away is a powerful motivator for relief. The temporary relief of such pain, that alcohol and drugs provide, is making them ever more attractive to younger children. I propose we make a commitment to teach our children a basic understanding about the key emotion of anger (my specialty). To do so, would empower them to be able to say NO to the temporary relief of misplaced revenge and to drugs and alcohol as well.

I heard that from now until I retire (since I fall into the last two weeks of “Boomer”) that a Boomer will retire every eight seconds.
I read recently that a child drops out of high school every twenty seconds.
Now, when I retire and my health degresses back to the point where I am a diaper-wearing fogey with greasy green feces (just like when I was a baby… good grief, the stench!), there will be a high school dropout to care for me and two of my dearest green-diapered co-Boomers. How gratifying to me!
Perhaps that unsavory mental exercise can compel a young adult to finish - and even extend - schooling, so that the choice of career will be his or hers, not the choice of where socienty shall warehouse him or her - whether that warehousing be in Tent City, a full-bore Prison, or in the dank and smelly retirement hole where I, too am warehoused for my final days.

Thank you for the opportunity to talk about domestic violence. However, in the home is where many of the topics begin. And it is out of the home that we can all make a difference. I am not afraid to get involved with people, whether, old, young, handicapped, in need or needing attention or a helping hand.

We should not be afraid to talk to people. If we (I do not like to use “YOU”) see a child in public that is bruised etc, we should not be ashamed, afraid, nor hold back our concern. Find a way to speak to the child and ask what happened without arousing the parent’s concern. If we see a woman or today even a man bruised etc. we should show our concern and ask what happened to cause the bruise etc. It is surprising how we can influence another by just talking and being a friend or friendly. Our concern can aim the other person in the direction of getting help, confiding or talking to a close friend, or getting medical or legal help.
